Black Power ABC's Card Set

Sale price$25.00 Member Price
Created by a current college student double concentrating in Africana Studies & Modern Culture and Media, Black Power ABC's is a collection of alphabet flash cards featuring the names and images of prominent figures, concepts, and sites of the global Black Power Movement. The collection was developed both for display and as a teaching tool. Inspiration for this project was drawn from the 1970 Black ABC's project, created by the Society for Visual Education in Chicago, and the Black Panther Liberation schools.

Whereas the traditional narrative surrounding the black power movement is one which centers the United States, Black Power ABC's seeks to illustrate the transnational nature of the Black Power Movement. Whereas the traditional narrative surrounding the black power movement centers the work of men while erasing the contributions of black women, Black Power ABC's seeks to highlight the contributions that women made to the black power movement. Whereas the traditional narrative surrounding the black power movement often overlooks the revolutionary nature of music and art, Black Power ABC's seeks to uplift artists as essential to Black Power, alongside scholars and political leaders. Black Power ABC's also seeks to include the work of queer black activists within the narrative and context of Black Power. This approach asserts that the liberation of queer black people is an integral part of the Black Power movement.
