Calder, who incorporated discarded and found materials into his work throughout his career, painted São Paulo on plywood recycled from a shipping crate. The plywood sheet was originally used as a rigid board to latch down a mobile for safe transportation to the artist’s solo show at the 1953 II Bienal, Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo. Upon close inspection, the holes that were drilled to tie down the mobile can be seen.

About the designer:
Based in New York City, Rome Pays off is a premium fashion and lifestyle brand that prides itself on balancing the worlds of art and fashion while celebrating individual style. They work with culturally relevant artists to create statement-making pieces that are alternately conspicuous and subversive.

Rome Pays Off sets itself apart by putting artist collaborations at the heart of the brand versus using them merely as a supporting element. Creativity and collaboration are at the core. They redefine what an artist edition and product can be—something that challenges the ordinary, penetrates the humdrum, and sparks conversation.
