The Mesh Canvas: Frank Stella

Mesh, thread, and needles. Edition of 250. Image size is 8" x 8".

The Mesh Canvas, a collaboration between Frank Stella, Art in America and Artspace, brings to life an artist-designed project photographed in the May-June 1968 issue of Art in America. These limited-edition needlepoint cushions were produced to celebrate Stella's retrospective, opening October 30, 2015 at the new Whitney Museum in New York. While Stella’s original designs, adapted from his 1961 series “Concentric Squares,” were stitched by Antoinette Fraissex du Bost, the wife of influential gallerist Leo Castelli, this edition allows the viewer to become involved in the creative process.

Each kit includes 2 canvases, needle and thread, instructions, 2 prints and an excerpt from the May-June 1968 Art in America article featuring the original project.
