Stuart Davis Sketchbook
Availability: In stock
Hardcover. Publushed by Taplinger, 1987. 96 pages.
This book is a compilation of three sketchbooks drawn by Whitney Collection artist, Stuart Davis during his extended stays in Gloucester, Massachusetts. These specific sketchbooks were created during 1932 and 1933, however, Davis made numerous visits to Gloucester from 1915 through the 1930s. Therefore, these drawings are a part of a larger body of work from those years and became the basis for various gouaches and oil paintings.
Davis's use of the sketchbooks gradually gave way to an ongoing journal of ideas and studies over 10,000 pages of which are now on deposit at the Houghton Library of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.
This collection makes available an aspect of Davis's work that was previously inaccessible. The three sketchbooks are reproduced in their original size and entirety in a facsimile format.
