He emerged in the early 1980s as a leading figure of the loosely defined East Village scene of galleries, clubs, and alternative art spaces, and collaborated widely with his peers, including Kiki Smith and Peter Hujar, who was Wojnarowicz’s close friend and mentor until Hujar’s death in 1987.
