Demian DinéYazhi' Bee Pin
Enamel on metal. Brooch closure. Artwork by Demian DinéYazhi'.
Artist Demian DinéYazhi' was invited to create a work of art to be featured for the most recent harvest of our Flora Honey, which is gathered and bottled by Let It Bee Apiaries from the hives on the roof of the Whitney Museum of American Art. This enamel pin shares the same design that they created for the glass honey jars.

Regarding the word for honey in the Diné language, Tsís´Ná Bitl´izh, DinéYazhi' says "I've asked around to my elders and none seem to be able to come back with an exact English translation. Sometimes things don't translate to English. Basically, Tsís´Ná translates to 'Bee' and Bitl´izh would translate to something like 'creation of, or created by, or something the body produces.' So a really rough translation would be 'Creation of the be.' It's beautiful and poetic. But a more modern interpretation would be translated to 'honey.'"
